FAT32 might seem like an outdated system. But is it really?
The following is by my understanding.
FAT32 is a way of formatting storage devices; other ways include EXT4 (Linux) and NTFS (Windows). FAT32 came out in 1996 and is still used for Windows rescue disks.
To my knowledge, the 32 means that FAT32 was based on a 32-bit system. One important limitation of FAT32 seems to be that its maximum file size is 4GB (232). There are other potential limitations on it, sometimes imposed by the operating system using it.
Besides its use in Windows rescue disks, one reason FAT32 comes up in my world is because it’s compatible with Linux.
